Book Review: "On the Edge of Trust" by Patricia Bradley

I picked up this book on Clearance during a clean-out at Mardel, a delightful little bookstore that often surprises me with hidden gems. As I browsed through the stacks, I was on a mission to find some suspense novels that would not only captivate my attention but also align with my personal preferences. Specifically, I had been seeking stories that were free from excessive language and, most importantly, devoid of any descriptive intimate moments that often detract from the plot.

This book met all my requirements and then some. It certainly includes a love story, which adds an interesting layer to the narrative, but what I found most compelling was the author’s remarkable ability to weave the faith of her characters into the fabric of their everyday lives. The characters navigate a

world filled with relatable experiences, and the portrayal of their struggles and triumphs resonates deeply. You don't get the sense of out-of-date cultural worldviews; instead, the author presents perspectives that are viewed through a biblical lens, reflecting the insights of individuals who have genuinely lived through significant challenges. The author skillfully captures the cautious and often prejudiced views of a character who has endured a traumatic experience, writing in a way that not only draws readers into their emotional journey but also serves to convict us for making similar mistakes in our own lives.

The narrative revolves around a crime podcaster who delves into cold cases, an intriguing premise that sets the stage for a thrilling exploration of mystery and personal growth. As the story unfolds, she discovers that her nephew has become entangled with the wrong kind of trouble, a revelation that adds urgency and tension to the plot. Simultaneously, she grapples with the repercussions of being "too good" at her job, which complicates her personal life and relationships. Alongside her partner, who provides both support and a contrasting viewpoint, and a newly found "friend" who brings unexpected dynamics into the mix, they embark on a quest for answers. Throughout this journey, the main character is forced to confront her own instincts and biases, realizing that her initial judgments might not always be reliable. This exploration of trust, both in others and oneself, adds depth to the narrative, making it not just a suspenseful tale but also a poignant reflection on human relationships and the complexities of our perceptions.
